Roads
There are a number of different options that exist in terms of getting around in Africa. The national speed limit in Africa is between forty kilometers per hour and eighty kilometers per hour on the roads within the residential areas. The motorways, freeways and national roads tend to have a speed limit of one hundred and twenty kilometers per hour. Every year about ten thousand people are killed on the roads throughout Africa. Despite the large distances between different parts of Africa it is actually very easy to get around. There is generally a good network of transportation that is available within this area.
If you want to visit places such as the national parks when on holiday in Africa then driving is really the best way to do it. It is true to say that you will need a car to be able to reach the remote parts of Africa and these are some of the best parts. This is a reasonably good area to drive around and the road networks tend to be very well maintained. It is also not that expensive to hire a vehicle to get around whilst in Africa and this can often work out to be the cheapest method of getting around.
Cycling
There are a lot of opportunities to get around Africa by cycling as this can help you to get access to some very stunning areas. Most of the towns throughout Africa have bike shops where people are able to hire a mountain bike and these shops tend to charge very reasonable rates. The only real problem that people tend to face when it comes to cycling around Africa is the weather as it can sometimes be very wet or it may be too hot. It is not recommended that you cycle on the main roads, as they tend to be very busy with cars and other motorized methods of transportation.
Buses
The buses that operate in Africa tend to stick to the main routes and will not offer services to get to the remote parts of the country. There are three main companies that operate buses across Africa and these are known as Translux, Greyhound and also Intercape. Traveling on the buses that are operated by these companies is very safe and comfortable whilst also offering good value for money. These buses, which are commonly referred to as coaches, tend to be equipped with both toilets and air conditioning.
Trains
There are about twenty thousand three hundred and eighty three kilometers of railway lines within Africa. The company that is known as Transnet as well as some smaller subsidiary companies who work alongside Transnet operates the trains within Africa. Traveling around Africa using trains is probably the slowest method of transportation. For example, a journey that would take nineteen hours on a bus will actually take about twenty nine hours on a train.
Water
There are a number of different harbors and ports throughout Africa. These ports are used considerably for both shipment of goods and transportation of tourists and locals alike.
